Wonderings on wisdom, community, and Elderhood

I see the signs everywhere that we yearn for these things, but are struggling to reconstruct a culture that honors them.

These days, while it feels like we’re watching the world burn, the yearning for Elders to help us make sense of the chaos can be a very primal craving. And for most people in “Western Culture”, most of us don’t even recognize that’s the yearning we are wrestling with.

But I see it everywhere… lately it seems everyone is some kind of coach, and self-help books are constantly being promoted. They reflect our deep desire for wisdom and reflection and frankly, someone to tell us what the fuck to do when everything feels so uncertain.

I share some thoughts in this episode about how to handle this yearning with integrity if you’re in the business of helping others, as well as how to give yourself some grace to take the pressure off your shoulders.

And for fun, a red-bellied woodpecker and a ruby-throated hummingbird chime in to share their medicine too.

I’m curious, and would love to hear your thoughts:

  1. What sparked your heart in what I shared?

  2. How do you show up in your business so that it’s an honest expression of you and how you work best, or are you struggling with feeling like a square peg in a round hole?

  3. How do authentically share your wisdom with others who are seeking guidance (while acknowledging the areas that aren’t yours to teach yet)?

Oh, the book I meant to reference is “Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest” by Susan Simard, she goes into the forestry science and her own personal experience growing up in a forestry family - my daughter loved the book and I’m going to work my way through it soon.

“The Hidden Life of Trees” by Peter Wohlleben is another one I’ve heard of, but haven’t read yet.
