This morning I was up well before dawn with my kids and we ventured out into the chilly darkness to be greeted by the nearly full moon, the stars, and Venus shining in the morning sky.
I took them to my favorite local spot for viewing sunrise - a rite of passage that they’ve never been allowed to do with me before. There was some nervousness within them about being out in the dark so early, but also excitement about not knowing what to expect.
In the first light before sunrise, we were greeted with dolphins, an osprey, a dear friend on a morning walk, sweet flowers, and a cloudy morning.
Despite the prospect at not seeing the sun, we set the intention to enjoy this first experience together and eventually the sun graced us with a stunning show. My 4 year old marveled at how the sky transitioned from dark to light (below), and my 7 year old enjoyed the cool early morning and shining moon.
A new Spring Equinox tradition was born, marking the day when we have equal day and night, and celebrating the official arrival of Spring.
We also talked about how the weather is changing, what time the sun sets and rises, how the air feels different, and which birds are calling (and nesting). Little things that help them be present in their bodies and learn to connect to Mother Earth.
And we talked about how the energy of the astrological new year also starts today, hailing Aries season (March 20- April 19), and what that fiery energy of action, initiation, and courage brings to our bodies, lives, and the Earth. Little things that begin to orient them to being present with themselves and the world around them.
It’s a day I know they’ll always remember because you could see their souls light up with a sense of adventure and connection that we kindled in the early morning light.
